matte shadow reflection material renders black

when I apply a matte/shadow/reflection material to an object it renders black instead of transparent with shadows. I tried to camera map the background image to the ground plane matte object but it just renders out solid black. What’s going on here?

Are you using Exposure Control? It’s probably due to the Physical Scale.
You may want to switch it to unitless and alter the scale.
