| Mental Ray Arch Materials Error! - SOS!
|
|
|
Hello everyone. Ive tried just about everything, but cant solve a materials mental ray issue I’m having. Sometime after the SP1 update to MAX 2010 x64, my arch+design materials and templates don’t work anymore. All that I get now (screenshot) is...well nothing. After selecting an arch+design material in a slot, Ill scroll down the templates selections, choose copper (or anything else) and get...a shiny grey material. Any help or ideas?
Ive already tried to repair, but my discs wont repair because its the 2010 update and say that the 2010 I have is newer than the repair function.
short of uninstall and reinstalling the previous 2010 (we need 2010 sp1 for the render farm to work)

This happens a lot, I had it last week.
See this thread and this thread.
Try Ivan’s tip of making the file read only to stop it happening again after you have fixed it.

Samab, thanks a ton! Sadly, if my mr_arch+design materials file is corrupted, I cannot copy it from anywhere to fix it. Is there someplace I can get a copy of it? I am loath to reinstall max and all my plugins if I can help it…

When I saved a material to the library, I got this IO Error message. Even though the material was saved to the default library, it seems Max is trying to alter the A&D Preset lib when saving a material. I presume this is the cause of this bug where the preset lib is corrupted, it’s getting overwriten. After it happened the last time I made it read only, so I’m getting this error when Max tries to overwrite it.
Does anyone know more about the bug, it’s been in a few versions. Is it whenever you save a material? Or just because this material I saved started life as a preset?

If you load an Arch & Design preset, build your material using the preset and try to put it into the library Max is always trying to rewrite the Preset Library.
Without using a preset, no such issue.
That has been like this from the very beginning; an Arch & Design bug.
Therefore making the library read only is recommended.

I suppose clicking the error message off is a lesser inconvinience than having to replace the matlib every time it gets corrupted.

Right, and as you surely noticed, the warning is just an info showing that the bug is neutralized, actually max put the material into the Mtl Library and one can through “save as” translate it in any particular directory.

Ok guys...well, it still doesnt work, so im pretty sure the only solution is to reinstall everything.

Did you replace the file with the one I posted?
It has worked for me, on more than one occasion. Only this time I made the mended file read only so it doesn’t happen again.

yep. Just to be sure, I copy/pasted the file into these directories:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2010\materiallibraries
D:\Documents\3dsmax\materiallibraries
same problem still happens :-(

C:\Program Files\ is enough; the directory must look like that: See Attachment.
Delete the old file and copy there the zipped file coming with my post.
It must be the same one Samab already posted but nevertheless try again.
Anyway what OS are you running?

That’s really odd; maybe you have damages somewhere else.
Just a suggestion; try removing just the SP1, before complete reinstall, repeat the copy-past action with the template and install the SP1 again.
