Translucent Material

How do you make a material translucent? I am new to this so I need help than normal.

Moved from Max2009 as this (Materials forum) is a much more appropriate place for this question.

It helps greatly, especially in the non version-specific forums, if you put your Max version (and brief system specs) in your sig.

If u enable the mental ray renderer, you have an option in the Arch and Design material to enable translucancy.

Also with mental ray there are SSS shaders, for more sophisticated (and Slower) effects.
If using Scanline you can set a standard material to “Translucent” by changing the shader type in the dropdown in the “Shader Basic Parameters” rollout.

If its Vray go where it says “Refraction” in the material menu and play with it, white is completely translucent, black is opaque, but also go and check some tuts about index of refraction (IOR) and BRDF reflections so you start with the right foot.
