Is there a way of opening up the colorpicker dialog without clicking on the colorpicker rollout control?

Yes, look up “colorPickerDlg” in the Maxscript help.
Please put your Max version, and brief system specs, in your sig - it’s important to know when answering this type of question. The above function only exists as-is in Max 2008 or higher (previously available through the AVG extensions).
