Hello guys,

I would like to ask someone who has some free time on their hands to try and make a simple importer script for 3DSMax for a .mdl 3d model format.
It is a model format for game called Runescape and it’s not the same as half-life or quake’s .mdl format.

We currently do have a simple program (not associated with 3dsmax) which imports this .mdl file and exports to .mqo (format for software called Metaseq) called DATMaker, but the problem is that the .mqo format does not support all geometry (skeleton, bones) and so only mesh is exported.

So I’m kindly requesting a script for 3dsMax which would import Runescape’s .mdl model file with all the geometry, not just mesh.

I have attached a rar archive of few Dragon NPC model .mdl files. If you want to have a look at that DATMaker program which reads this .mdl file, just google “DATMaker Runescape download” or if you can’t find let me know and I will upload.

I don’t think it should be complicated to make this import script, because Runescape’s .mdl models are very “light” in size, all of them are less than 1-2k polygons and they don’t use textures either.

Thanks a lot, if you have any questions or if you’re going to attempt to make the script, please post :)

EDIT:
It’s either just me, or attachments don’t work.. I have uploaded the rar archive of sample .mdl models to uppit instead:

Thanks again.

You cannot attach .rar files - use .zip. See this post for help with attachments.

While nothing is impossible, it is not too likely anyone here has the time to dedicate to a job such as that. Writing an importer which includes stuff like skeletal animation is not trivial.

why not?
I heard that it isn’t hard or long writing an import MAXscript.. Lots of games have an import script to 3dsMax for their model extension and people who made those scripts said it is not hard..

I would attempt making it myself, but I never done any MAX scripting.

There is a difference between “not hard” and “I think I’ll spend 200 hours of my time doing a job for no pay”.

If it’s so easy, just learn maxScript yourself. MaxScript is “not hard” either.
