I want to create an edge and a vertex to an object and then choose where to connect it to.  Using the break tool in the vertex sub object menu does not work becasue the new vetex is connected to several other vertexes and creates an unwanted shapes.

Can you post a screenshot of what you have and what you’re trying to do please. “Breaking” vertices breaks the link between adjacent polys, which I’m guessing is not what you want. Assuming an Editable Poly object, try going to Edge mode and using the “Insert Vertex” tool (button is on the Edit Edges rollout).

In addition to Steve’s suggestion, use “Cut” tool in Edit Poly/Editable Poly. “Cut” doesn’t literally cut polys or edges into pieces, it creates edges or divides polys in locations of your choosing.

I’m trying to add a new point to the nose so that the whole face doesn’t pop out in the middle.

I think I know what you mean, but it would be much easier for us if you were to post the scene (zipped). If the images on the planes are not part of Max (or its tutorials) include them in the zip please.

The tools in Edit Poly like Connect and Cut will probably do what you want.

You can also use this method Spinola, (See Attachment) it is clean, no danger to get nasty surprises like double vertices and so on culprits at the opposite side of the model or elsewhere. :-)

connecting the two verticies dosen’t creat a new segment.

connecting the two verticies dosen’t creat a new segment.

My suggestion is that one can create new edges without using the Cut tool, which sometimes produces double vertices. Connecting two vertices gives birth to an edge not a segment. Actually what is Segment, in Editable poly there are no segments, what do you mean mentioning it?
