Btw, you do realise that capping the end then extruding it gives a functionally identical result to extruding the edges then capping the end?

Yes, but I had trouble extruding the edges. They didn’t want to go in the proper direction.

Using the Extrude tool and Shift+Moving the edges are not quite the same. If you re-read my replies I did suggest using Shift+Move (which does do what you would expect.
Perhaps a “time out” from the tutorial and have a play with the two methods to better understand how they work might be beneficial. Also remember that “Shift+” also works with Rotate and Scale - the outcome is dependent not only on which tool you have selected, but also on the coordinate system (view, world, local etc) and on the transform center (pivot point, selection center). There are a lot of possibilities there - each is useful under certain circumstances - the art of using Max is to just “know” which tool with which options will give you the results you need in a specific situation. That kind of thing is difficult, if not impossible, to learn from tutorials - you need to spend some time away from them just “playing with the options” in order to fully understand the strengths (and the limits) of each one.
