Can I separate the geometry for texturing? Help!!!!! (file attached)

as you see in the pic, top is blue and bottom is gray.
I approached this by applying texture to selected polygons.
but I am wondering if there is more effitient way to approach this.
I don’t want to detach the mesh.

is uv mapping is the only solution?

The UV Mapping and UVW Unwrap modifier are both tools you use to setup how you want your material to be displayed on your object. I believe what you are after is Material ID’s which you use to assign multiple materials to different sections of your object. You can use a Multi-Material in the Material Editor to configure each Material to their ID on the Object. (see attachment)
