| Car modeling without blueprints?
|
|
|
I’ve set a task to model a 1969 Dodge Charger in 3ds max, but after 2 days of searching I’ve not found a set of blueprints that actually align or are in proportion with each other. So I though maybe I could model the car with only reference images, like real life pictures. Still I have no idea how to set them up or which ones to use. Any help with finding images or tips on how to go by modeling the car will be appreciated. Thanks :D

I was modelling a 69 Charger a while back and I used the diagrams from the instruction manual for a model charger which worked really good along with reference photos. I scanned the diagrams again and you can use these which are in pretty good proportion.

Don’t mean to be rude, but this is the very blueprint I was talking about (or at least a variation of it). The side is really disproportional to the top, and front and back view have depth in them, which makes the image distorted. But I would really like to see the end result of your model.

check out the-blueprints.com. I’ve found a ton of car blueprints there, you may be able to fund the one youre looking for

That’s one of the few cars that they’re dry on. But does anyone have an idea how to model a car by using only reference images?

Checking the plans posted above, you are right, the different elevations are not to the same scale. The sides are a little shorter than the top, the front and rear are smaller than the sides.
Try re-scaling them in PS to get them to match up. Set guides at key points to help get them in line.

I got side tracked with other projects while working on this and never made the interior, but I believe I used these diagrams as a starting point, then modified the model according to reference images. I also had the model car in front of me so I could look at it at any angle which was a big help. Here are some shots of how mine came out.

Looks sweet. Still I don’t think I can handle that. I’m one of those people who need the entire blueprint to match up completely in order to start doing something. I never learned how to go around that problem.

I found a tutorial a while ago on how to create a reference plain for modeling a car using photos. It showed how to stitch together multiple photos to remove perspective distortion, and featured a yellow sports car of some kind. I just spent about ten minutes searching google to try and find it again, but no luck. I hope that what I’ve told you will give you some luck finding something that will help, I didn’t search very hard so I’m sure you’ll have more luck than I did. Also I’m not sure, but I think I found the tutorial on tutorialized.com.

I believe if you really want to model a car, some basic PS-skills might come in handy. I would really look into that.
Took me about 3 minutes to align those views. They might not be perfect, but they are quite low on the detail anyway, so you’ll need some photo reference this way or the other.
Good luck modelling.
Sebastian.
