I’ll be modeling a high detail character, which would also be an animation. It’ll start off as a low quad polygon. But for details what should I do go to Zbrush3 or start screwing with 3dsmax9. If Zbrush3 is the answer, then will I still be able to animate the model in 3ds max9 or no? Also I would like some non-nude 3-view male models, real would be preferable

Hi there

I also have similar questions...I have been wondering whether you can use high poly meshes created in Zbrush in 3D max 9. I think the only way you can import the mesh back into 3d max is as a OBJ file....but this means it will have lots of vertices everywhere?

Is there any other way of bringing in high detail Zbrush models, so that you can animate them in Max?

Kind regards
Jay

I’ve been trying to start modelling in Zbrush then bring the model to max , exporting it as an .obj , the problem is everytime i’ve try the export max crashes, maybe it is due to the quality of the exporting plugin as i didnt got problems when exporting very simple meshes

First thanks a lot guyz, no one was responding for a week. Anyway besides the formality, throughout my internet surfing what I’ve found is that Most people model, detail in Zbrush then export it back to max as OBJ for rendering purposes; some people model in max(max being easier) & export it to Zbrush for touchups, & export to max again for rendering, what I’ve never come across is that people animating after touching up in Zbrush, cause I know when u do stuff in Zbrush & export to max there is an endless abyss of vertices all over the screen, that looks like a nightmare and probably a person is hired to do the dirty work lol ! What I’m confused like, cristobal replied here:

This is the same case I find some time not always, I just want to be sure that when my character is done (high detailed near realism in max with more than 12’000 polygon) & I do some extra touch ups in Zbrush & export it to max for animation & rendering what would be the Result? Besides I still dont own a Dual Core Processor

Hi, I’m sorry you did not get a reply.

Usually, high-res version is not exported back in Max as OBJ. It’s the low-res version that is exported back although i’ve seen some people who use the high-res strictly for rendering static images. High-res version is used to create displacement maps that are applied to the low-res model. You are probably better off in ZBrush Central with this type of question. http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/index.php They have ton of info there.

This has been a well established fact throughout forums that when the Administrator comes to the scene of crime, a quick look is taken & Blitzschnell ! You know who did it. Anyway since this was a CSI rip off & I dont intend to pop out the reader’s eyes, Thank Ekah ! Mean while I want to ask one more question though its a little off, but saves cluttering. What kind of rendering options are available in 3ds max9? I’ve heard of mental ray, taken a very fast view of how it works (though my head was aerodynamic), seen the results. Can anyone describe me briefly how it works & what is the level of mumbo jumbo language that is used in mental ray I mean, is it a Cerebric assassin or a nice breeze to understand mental ray? Is it also possible to use M.R. for animation purposes?

I’m not familar with CSI. I know, I’ve been told that I should be. I don’t live under the rocks either. There are just too many things, too little time. :)

Check out the Mental Ray 101 section and go to Mental Ray Introduction and FAQ here. Hopefully it’ll be a “nice breeze.”

Mental Ray ships with 3ds Max, but there are other 3rd-party renderers as well:

V-Ray: http://www.chaosgroup.com

Final Render: http://www.finalrender.com

Brazil: http://www.splutterfish.com

As for which one is better, I am not well versed enough to have an opinion.

Below is an old discussion about 3rd party renderes from previous AREA that might interest you. (Warning: Please do not post there. It is in the process of being archived for read-only)

p.s. If you are still in the process of considering a sculpting package, take a look at Mudbox as well. http://www.mudbox3d.com/ They are now part of Autodesk. Because of this transition, you won’t be able to purchase nor download a trial at the moment. They have a nice community there with helpful members.

There is a quadrangulate polygon feature in Maya which does a good job returning an OBJ back to quad model.

There might be a modifier in Max or it might just go quad when you convert to edit poly mode - I’ll have to look when I’m installed
