Using 3ds Max 2009.

I’m trying to turn two lines (and I can add two more if needed) into a plane so that I can extrude it and use it as a base for a Subtraction Boolean primitive.  This would be removed from a terrain made from an AutoCAD drawing of contours.

Everything I have tried has caused the finished product to be a complete jumble of useless garbage.

[MY NEWBIE STATUS SHINES THROUGH HERE!!!]

I have attached a Max file with two lines in it. I’m hoping someone can see my problem and explain a way to achieve my goal.  I’ve tried this tutorial and it didn’t work.  Not sure what else I can do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Without seeing what these two lines look like, I can tell you right off the bat that you don’t want to make a Plane.  You want 3D geometry if you’re planning to do a Boolean.  So instead of trying to make a Plane, make the lines into a closed shape.  Then if you extrude it, it will have volume that can be subtracted by the Boolean operation.

But show us a screen grab, or zip the file so we can take a look.

[edit- i see the file is attached now]

Easy enough.  You have two separate splines that need to first be Attached, then use the Connect command in Sub-Object vertex to draw a segment between the open end vertices.  Add an Extrude modifier, and you get the shape I show in the attached image.

Is this what you’re trying to do?
