| Editable poly - welding mirrored parts
|
|
|
Hi guys,
There is a huge bug, I believe with polys. I had a very simple symmetrical object. I modeled one side and then used tools/mirror to mirror it. Then I wanted to weld vertices on the open ends. Two welded but the other two didn’t. The first two that welded also generated some weird faces also, only visible when I moved them. Anyone came across this?

Make sure there are no polys where the 2 halves meet, also make sure that all the vertices which need to be welded are planar.
You could (in addition) try using the Symmetly Modifier rather then Mirror > Attach > Weld.
If you can’t sort it out, post the scene (zipped) so we can take a look.

I’ll try with symmetry modifier next time. There were no extra polys, very simple object.
By planar vertices, you mean that they are close enough? I tried very big thresholds, so they really were close enough.

No - planar means that they all lie in the same plane. For example, if you create a Box the vertices of each side will all lie flat in either the X, Y or Z Planes.
Can you at least post a clear image of the object? it’s not easy trying to advise when we can’t see the problem…

I no longer have the original object...already remodeled it different way. But, I was able to recreate the problem. Create a box, use slice in the middle and then delete one part. Then use tools/mirror to mirror it, and then try to weld those vertices.

You’re doing something wrong somewhere - that works perfectly in every version of Max I’ve tried it in.
However, you missed out several important steps in the procedure.
Create a box. Move it to the Origin so it’s easier to see what is going on.
Convert to Editable Poly
Rotate the Perspective viewport so that the X axisi is running left/right and the Y axis is (roughly) in/out of the viewport
Poly SO level, select all (Ctrl-A)
Click “Slice Plane”
Turn on Angle Snaps to ensure you rotate exactly 90 degrees
Rotate the Slice plane gizmo so that it is vertical and aligned along the Y axis
Click “Slice” once then de-activate the slice tool and deselect the polys
Area Select the right-hand half of the model (polys) and Delete them
Return to the Object Level, click Mirror on the main toolbar
Choose “X” as the Mirror Axis, and “Copy” in the Clone Selection options, click OK
Select the original half of the box, Attach (on the Edit Geometry rollout) then click the new object created by the Mirror
Vertex SO level, area select the vertices in the middle of the box (the should be 8 of them selected)
Click Weld.
Please try the above procedure, step by step (don’t miss a step, don’t add any steps) and see if it works for you.

That’s how I do it every time, and it worked this time lol. I’m gonna try several more times to see where the problem was.

My bet is on not Attaching them before trying to weld the vertices.

No, of course I did, when I clicked SO I wouldn’t see the vertices of the other object then...very obvious.

Obvious? Maybe - but you’d be surprised how many threads there are on here where people have tried to weld vertices from different objects.

greetings to everyone
i am curently creating a model of human face, first i created the skin surrounding the eye by polygon modelling, then i created nose and deleted the symmetrical half of nose and mirrored it,now i attached the eye skin with the nose(both were already in editable poly mode). here the problem arises,i m unable to weld the vertices between these two elements(nose and eye skin). can anyone point out what seems to be the problem?
thanks in advance

It’s hard to tell without looking at the model or some close-up screenshots. As Steve mentioned in previous replies to original poster, it sounds to me like you may have additional polys/vertices between the two (eye skin, nose) elements.
Would it be possible for you to upload a (zipped) Max scene with just the polys where you want to weld? Also include a pic indicating the where you want to weld.
