Hello.

I noticed that in 3ds max 2012, when i split an edge or detach a polygon the smoothing at that point changes and seam is visible. I think that in previous versions when i did the same thing the smoothing remained. Is there a way to prevent this?

Thanks in advance

You can apply the ‘Edit Normal’ modifier to both objects and average the edge normals under a given threshold.  Notice that this won’t work if you apply a turbosmooth over the Edit Normals modifier.

The reason for this is that any place where there are split edges (where you split the edges, or all of the edges around the detached polys) there is no longer any connection between the two adjacent polygons. It’s basically like having two separate meshes next to each other, and smoothing both separately. This can be very useful sometimes, but you must be careful as well because it causes your mesh to be non-manifold.

Thank you both for your replies.

I noticed something though.
In this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HWDgjHHVOA8 the guy detaches parts of the object and the smoothing is maintained (no visible seams).
Why is this happening? if i try detaching a part of an object the seam becomes visible. What is he doing different?
