Make 2D in Max

Does anyone know of a command or script in Max that can make orthographic views of a 3d object to-scale, similar to the “Make 2D” command in Rhino. The “Section” command will not work as it only cuts through a single plane… Need a scaled elevation view rather than a section.

I would like to export the 2d views to Autocad to put accurate dimension lines and color key notations. I have tried exporting the 3d object to Autocad as well but ran into problems with the exported 3d file.

How did you export the 3d? What problem did you run into?

Exported as .dwg and as .3ds. Importedthe file into AutoCad but when I tried to run FLATSHOT command and that didn’t work… said that no surfaces were detected.

Tried a number of export options to AutoCad… .SAT seemed to work the best.

Even Sketchup has this function and that program can be downloaded for free. For those of us in the construction industry, exporting 3d models to a program that can generate dimensioned views is an essential part of a typical workflow. We need to send out scalable views for client review and pricing estimates.

For those focused solely on animation or gaming, this post is of little use, but if you are in the architectural field, I would imagine that there is a large demand for this feature.

1) Export your model from 3dsmax as an .OBJ wavefront file
2) Open Rhino and import your OBJ
3) Scale and check everything is how you want it
-- Right now it is a mesh not a polysurface / nurbs so it can not make 2d.
Hence your problem.

4) Select your mesh and type MeshtoNURB, and it will convert each and every polygon into an individual surface
5) Rotate your perspective view, and type Make2D. Now it will work

Thanks. Tried the OBJ export option listed above… seems to work in Rhino but takes a very long time to process. Exporting as SAT and importing to AutoCAD, then using FLATHSHOT seemed to do the trick as well and was faster, at least for the model I am working on.

Still would be great if Max could have some type of Make 2D command similar to other 3d programs.

For your information, the Rhino v5 64 Bit Open Beta is out with a proper serial key and Make2D has been reworked and is much faster than Rhino 4.

Flatshot is inherently faster, but I find it less accurate then even Rhino’s Make 2D.

I agree, Make2D in Maya and Max is a luxury I wish I had.

if you have autocad architectural desktop, you can export the model from max as an autocad file, open in ADT, go to the view you want and do a hidden line projection. this will creat a 2d projection of the view you selected. it works great for axonometric views, cut aways, elevation, plans, etc…
