I’ve used it a few times with good results.

I’m a big fan of the Sweep modifier--mainly because it’s so flexible and straightforward.  Create your wires as splines and apply Sweep using the circular shape (I can’t remember what they call it.."rod"? “cylinder”?) with say 3 or 4 sides and smoothing on.  Voila!
