Am I making this too complicated:
I have, for example, a box (see Image1) that I want to remove the central edges and vertices from (highlighted in Image1). If I remove the edges I then need to go and remove all the vertices that were previously attached (see Image2).
My method for this is:
Select Edge
Loop
Ctrl click Vertex Icon (so when I go to select vertices later it will pick up the vertices loop)
Edge
Remove
Vertex
Remove

Ctrl-Backspace the edges :)

You can use Ctrl+Remove edges. This will save time going into Vertex mode to delete them.
