The problem I have is that I'd like to try to procedurally texture it first in Max. The object is all one group and I need to somehow separate out different parts for different textures. I thought I would select polys and try grouping them but that doesn't seem to work. The option to group polys is greyed out. So I figure I have to convert selected polys to objects first? I'm not sure of the difference between elements and objects either and I read something about layering...but I'm not sure of terminology or the best place to start. I did have the idea to uv unwrap, create masks to mask out different areas in Photoshop, and use that in the slate editor as a mask input node, but I really want to keep things within Max if I could. What's the best way to approach this? I need to take the current model and stretch it vertically into a coil spring shape. The sides of the model need to remain straight with the curved bends at each corner. I just need to stretch it so that the red section is the lowest and the white section is at the top of the spiral. I tried using a soft selection of the vertices, but it selected vertices traveling through the middle of the design. I could not figure out to select vertices starting at one end and have the selection travel through the shape and follow it like a path. I try to re-apply it but it does not change the outcome. As you can see in the large part seen in the picture it appears as though the auto smooth has been removed. I want to sim it around the body of an athlete. Using Cloth, I tried making the medallion rigid enough not to deform, but no luck. The ribbon sims just fine, and the medallion moves with the ribbon, but how do I make the medallion solid enough so it doesn't deform? It's definitely happening in 2014 still. Basically I import an obj file. It looks fine, but there are a few parts grouped together. I grab them by selecting element, and detach. Boom! Now the normals are all messed up on the detached object. I'm just looking for why that might be. Oh, and the same thing happens often when attaching other objects.
