Hello,

I have a question about soft selection.

I have noticed that when I select a vertex, edge, or polygon normally without using soft selection the selected geometry turns the color red. When the vertex is red it is one hundred percent selected and when it is blue it is zero percent selected. When using soft selection the colors range depicting the softness of the selection.

Now, I have a model that has no modifiers on it, it is just an editable poly. I have been using soft selection with a pen tablet to select vertices on the model. I then would apply mesh smooth to my selection from the edit geometry rollout to increase the verts to add more detail.

Just recently when I use soft selection with my pen tablet the highest possible color selection is orange(not red). I am unable to apply a mesh smooth because the vertices are not one hundred percent selected. This only happens when I use the paint soft selection feature. When I am using soft selection without the paint feature on I am able to get the color red but when I use paint soft selection I can only get orange as the highest level of selection.

This only happens when I use “paint soft selection” so I thought it might be my tablet. I have reinstalled my tablet driver and this has not solved my problem. I have adjusted alot of the settings in the brush opptions menu and this has not adjusted the ability to get 100% selection. In the soft selection rollout the selection value is at 1.0 and the brush strength is at 1.0 This is the highest it will go.

Are there any other options for fine tunning the selection value? Is there something else that might be interfereing with the ability to use “paint soft selection”?

Please ask me if I need to give more information. Thank you so much for helping me, your time is greatly appreciated.

I’m not using a tablet and am not able to recreate the problem. The selection range for me is blue-orange and meshsmooth gets applied to (vertex) sub objects within that range, regardless of selection softness.

Hi Ernestator,

Thank you for replying.

When I choose edge as a sub object and use soft selection with “paint soft selection” I am able to use mesh smooth from the edit geometry rollout. The mesh smooth affects the whole model though and completely disregards my selection. I have reset 3ds max and this has not solved my problem.

I recently updated my graphics card driver and this could be the problem but how?

Ha, I just tried this again and was unable to use Mesh Smooth from the Edit Geometry rollout after painting a soft selection, nothing happened. It seems reasonable since afaik Editable Poly Mesh Smooth does not subdivide based on soft selection values, e.g. you wont get “more subdivisions” in an orange area and less subdivisions in a blue area (This is in Max 9, and might have changed since). You could try using paint selection region (soft selection off and choose from the selection region dropdown on the top tool bar) and Mesh Smooth that selection from Edit Geometry rollout. Then use paint selection region again and Mesh Smooth that etc.

Generally, if you are after different levels of subdivisions in different areas of the mesh, look into the HSDS modifier (check “force quads” if applicable).

Hi ernestator,

Thank you so much, the paint selection region works well but is there a way to turn on ignore backfacing when using paint selection region? I get alot of unwanted selections when I use this.

The HSDS looks very cool. Max really slows down when I use it probably because i don’t know how to use it.

I was able to use paint soft selection to select an area on my mesh and apply a MSmooth prior to not being able to now so I know it is possible. I just have no idea why I am currently unable to use MSmooth with paint soft selection.

Thanks, your time is greatly apprecieted.

No Problem, regarding the paint selection, I found this in the help:

To change the brush size, right-click the Paint Selection Region button, and then, on the Preference Settings dialog, General tab, Scene Selection group, change the Paint Selection Brush Size value.

Tip: You can also create custom tools for changing the brush size; choose Customize menu > Customize User Interface and set keyboard shortcuts or other user interface items for the actions Paint Selection Size Up and Paint Selection Size Down.

To avoid selecting sub objects on the other side of the mesh, check the Ignore Backfacing checkbox in the modify tab, in sub object mode.

Tha HSDS is describes well in the manual.
