Hey matt, I just revised my tutorial again with some more text and pictures explaining some of the situations where uv smoothing artifacts won’t crop up, based on your example. I also clarified the whole turbosmooth in mentalray part of the tutorial, since my explanation was a bit vague. Hope that helps.
