| spline spline intersection??? help!
|
|
|
is there a way to either trim splines against each other, or insert vertices at intersection? or even snap to this intersection? I know I have intersections but neither trim nor a snap plugin I downloaded seems to be working - this is such an elementary thing but I can’t figure it out..
help?!

Please - put your Max version (and brief system specs) in your sig. In these non version-specific forums we need to know which version you’re using.
is there a way to either trim splines against each other
The Trim function does work. Both splines must be part of the same Editable Spline object.
Assuming a cross (2 splines crossing at right-angles), Spline sub-object mode and Click Trim, click the spline you want to trim, it will be trimmed to the closest spline which intersects the one you clicked.
or insert vertices at intersection
Cross Insert.
Vertex SO mode, click Cross Insert - the cursor will change when it is over an intersection. Click at that point and you will get 2 vertices, one on each spline.
or even snap to this intersection
Not that I know of. You can get close to it by using Edge snaps, but that isn’t perfect.

I will relate some of my experience using CrossInsert, and Trim/Extend in Max. They don’t always work as wanted or expected. I’ve had the most difficulty with CrossInsert, either the inserted vertex shoots off screen or the intersection is not recognized. I don’t think it likes long segments or Bezier curved vertices with long handles.
Trim will sometimes remove a much larger portion of a spline, especially when your spline object is rather complex. I’ve found that the order that you trim an area can also affect how well it trims the splines. Sometimes adding in vertices around the area will help, especially in a curve.

Ahh yes - for cross-insert to work the splines must actually be touching. If they are crossing in the Top viewport but are actually separated in Z they won’t cross-insert unless you adjust the tolerance spinner sufficiently to cover both.

thanks for the comments. I will ammend my profile to help with the forum posts. Here’s something that would also be useful - I can’t see an option for email notification for foum responses to posts being made. Usually that’s an option on these kinds of forums…
Based on everyone’s comments, I’m guessing the splines weren’t crossing, or at least Max for whatever can’t recongnize that they are. Seems strange that you wouldn’t be able to snap to an intersection if you can trim to one or even insert a vertices at one.

At the top of this very page, on the right, just under the topic. “Subscribe to this thread”.
The dev team are aware that subscriptions are not all they should be - it is being worked on. NB Don’t bother with the checkbox when you create a reply (it doesn’t work).

I had the same problem. I was looking for a script, but found it unseccesfull.
The way i resolved it, was by copyng the geometry away, and trough boolean operation > union intersected them. Then, i could snap to that points.
Hope it helps!
ANOTATTION: CALCAR in spanish = Trace. Just find out.
