Going through “Modeling a Chess Set” tutorial.

Got stuck on the Knight piece because the vertex will not connect.

See video.

Tell me how I am supposed to get them closed?

I tried double clicking.

Simple - you don’t.

A vertex in an Editable Spline can only have one or two segments attached to it. No “T” or “Y” junctions are allowed. Having created the new segment (from left to right) if you wish to move the endpoint you must area select around them because there are 2 vertices - one at the end of the segment you created, one in the middle of the segment on the right.

Editable Splines are not like Editable Meshes or Editable Polys where a vertex can be shared among (the endpoints of) many segments. If you move them apart as you did in the vid, the Surface Modifier (which comes later in that tutorial) will not work correctly - they need to stay together (coincident). Select them both and “Fuse” them - Fuse works like Weld does except you retain the separate vertices but they occupy the same point in 3D space as if they were welded (but they aren’t).

Get used to always area-selecting around vertices in Editable Splines and you won’t go far wrong. Note that you can also use the “area select” option on the Selection rollout to achieve the same result (selectng coincident vertices).

Ok. Thanks for the advice. I stuck it out until the end.

I was confused because other 3D software usually demands a link between two points is closed when brought together.

It worked. My first chess knight model looks more like a cobra/seahorse but the process taught me a lot.I tried to boolean an open mouth but ran into trouble because the top snout is not closed enough.

I think I did better with the apple.
