Up until now all of my modelling has been done in packages such as Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks (pretty simple mechanical assemblies) but I have finally decided that its time to learn how tou use the modelling tools in 3d max to creat some more exciting models.

I have bought a book on poly modeling by Todd Daniels which I have just started working through.

I would just like to know what is the preffered modelling technique for creating cars, boats, planes etc. From what i have seen in the book so far it would appear poly modelling is the way to go.

Thanks for any help

James

If you’re new to Max then the first thing you should do is the Tutorials which come with Max. Until you are familiar wilt all the modeling techniques in Max you won’t be able to decide which is “best” in any given circumstances - each has its strengths and weaknesses - there is no “one size fits all”, though Box Modeling and Poly Modeling are probably used more than the others, but it does depend on the actual model.

Max 4.2 through 2013.

NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.
