Hi,

I just posted a tutorial on using Mip Maps in Mental Ray for 3DS Max. I also added a maxscript to automate much of the process.

http://www.madguru.net/learn/3d_mip_map.php

Mip Maps are pre processed texture maps for use in rendering. In Mental Ray, they allow for efficient loading/unloading of portions of maps as needed during rendering. This allows for larger numbers/size of textures to be handled in a scene. Unfortunately 3DS Max does not directly support the use of “.map” files in Mental Ray, so the tutorial describes a work around to use them in 3DS Max and a maxscript to automate most of the process.

These are techniques I’m cobbling together for my next film, and just thought I would share along the way.

Hope you find it helpful. Feedback is welcome!

Thanks,

Adnan Hussain
