Assigning a Material via Script in Pflow

I am experimenting with scripted operators in Pflow and was able to successfully instance objects via scripting with the .particleShape property.  However I would like to be able to assign the particles a material per particle.  I have looked at the setParticleMtlIndexByID command, but am having trouble getting it to work, and don’t know if it is even the right command.  Does anyone have experience making this work?
