Hot day/ Gas effect

How can I make a distortion effect that looks like gas coming off the ground on a hot day.  I havn’t been able to find any tutorials on this.



Windows 64 Ultimate, Max 9 to current, Quad Q6600, 8gig RAM, 1gig 4870 HD

I do remember seeing one once, a long time ago. I think it involved a particle system with a refractive material or something like that. It’s probably the sort of effect that would be done best post render in a compositing/effects app. It may be that’s what the tutorial did, used particles for an image displacement map.

I don’t have the option of using any post apps.  Refractive surface should work well. Thnx for the idea!
