I have simulated the default and wavelet without problems but when I try to retime/optimize it it max crashes every time. I do not think it is lack of memory, the simulation is not that highres. The largest WT file is 91 934 KB and I have 12gb ram and i7 920 quadcore processor.

I have attached the max scene. Could someone please take a look at it and see if you can figure out what is wrong?

Gratefull for any help:)

If you re-save it for Max 2010 I can look around for you.

Excellent!
Here it is in 2010.

It worked fine here simulating 50 frames for the default & wavelet cache using your settings. I simmed about 25 frames of the post cache and it was fine. After I cancelled it and went back to frame 0 it crashed, but the cache files were fine. Using 2010 and FFX 2.1a.

Can you give more detail about your crash? Does it process any frames? Does it crash on random frames? What version of fume are you using? Have you tried it at a lower detail?

It crashes on frame 41 everytime when I’m simulating post, using 2011 and FFX 2.1c.  All the cache files for Default and WT works fine when I play them. The Post cache that do get processed works fine in playback as well.

I’ll try to do a lower detail sim and I’ll try it in 2010 as well.

Edit: Tried it in 2010. Same result, crash at frame 41.
Edit2: Tried re-timing from default cache and that worked fine.

I’m a bit lost here. I mean; it should be possible to do quite highres sims with 12gb ram should it not?

I continued the post processing sim after frame 25 and it crashed around the same frame as yours. My ram never ran out with only 6 gigs. I lowered the default detail to a little over 200 x 200 x 400 and it went through fine with post.

For me it seems to crash when using retime and the wavelet cache file gets to be about 100 mb. If I turn off retime, everything works fine. I’m thinking it might have to do with trying to interpolate between files that large, but that’s just a guess. You should contact Sitni Sati and see what they say.

Otherwise you could try using the time scale in the default sim instead if you can’t do a lower res sim.

Thanks for the help Krueger :)

I have already posted this problem at Sitni Sati but as it seems to take a while for them to respond I posted it here as well (and got a respond almost instantly:) ).

I’ll add your comment about WT and interpolating 100 mb files and post back here if and when a solution presents it self.

A bit strange though, if retiming is limited by such a low treshold for interpolation don’t you think? I mean, FFX is used in production and they would deal with much bigger cache files than the ones I have.

Thanks again for your help.

My renders still crash even when simulation with low settings in default and wavelet and then post retiming.
Sitni Sati does not respond to questions about this. I posted questions there about 2 months ago conserning this issue and still no answer.
Does anybody else have suggestions as to why this always happens when retiming in fumeFX?
I have 12gb ram and are not using anywhere near half of this when rendering. I have the latest Fume 3.1.
I am rendering at lowres. with output 480 X 320.

This is getting so frustrating to work with that if a solution does not present itself then it’s time to abandon the software and go buy Phoenix FD instead.

Sorry, had to let of some steam…

Any help is appreciated!

Your renders crash, or your simulations crash? Cause if your rendering a large sim, then it shouldn’t matter what your output resolution is. It still has to load that large cache frame into memory.

Fume 3 looks pretty cool though :)

My renders crash but my sim is not very large.
The 86 frames I Do get rendered out looks very staccato, like stop motion animation If you know what I mean. Could this have to do with to few sim steps?

What does it look like if you create the preview animation from ffx?

The ffx preview looks good.
So this is a render artifact then… any clue as to how I can avoid this in my renders?
I am currently using mental ray, would VRay be better maybe?
I have tried FinalRender but when using Global illumination, it takes for ever…

PS: The render still crashes at frame 87 and the largest file in the sim. is 320096 KB…
