Hi folks,

As many of you will have noticed, mental ray version 3.10 officially has PTEX.  This is great but the downside is no GUI for the coming Max 2013.

Is there anyone out there thinking of designing a way to actually use this MR feature for both texture and displacement maps in our renders?

I know that Max 2013 hasn’t even been released yet and it’s possible that we may get a GUI in a service pack but recent comments from AD people don’t exactly fill me with confidence that this is a priority.

I hope this topic is in the most relevant section and apologize if it’s not.

Thanks.

I was really hoping to spark some interest in the advantages that Ptex would bring to a workflow involving texture/displacement mapping and the like.  Perhaps most reading this are, like me, waiting for someone else to devise a solution.

Nevertheless, the more attention drawn to the issue the better so don’t hesitate to respond with any input you may have.  Maybe someone will step up and make it happen.  I honestly don’t see why a feature as significant as Ptex was not implemented in Max 2013 in the first place but I suppose there may be something in the works.

Any insight here would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I believe Mankua has a plugin called Stripes that can do it. Also, I believe vray for max has the ability to read ptex files. But yes, would love to see it natively supported in max.

Yes I have had a look at Stripes but it’s very limited at this stage and it looks like there will be no further development.

Also it can’t do displacement (as far as I know).

Considering VRay but I can’t justify the cost at the moment so I really hope we see some native support in MR/Max soon.

I think it’s only a matter of time before Ptex is standard between 3D apps.  I know Mudbox has it so ZBrush can’t be too far behind…

Thanks for your input, Neil.

Yup, as time goes on, it will start appearing in more apps, and I do hope max is one of them.

I’m not sure on that one, zbrush likes innovating, but they don’t have a very good track record of following industry standards :)

This is me shamelessly bumping the thread in the hopes that someone with relevant knowledge might notice and contribute something further.

Thanks.
