I have been seeing issues with people that are using Max design on some of my rigs. The issue is speed. Just selecting objects can take for ever and moving anything is impossible.

The characters in question are using my RAIC system, this system is being used in both of the free characters that are on my site called Walter and Oliver. They can be found at http://www.paulneale.com/product...nAnimationCharacters.html

If any of you are willing to install and then test to see if you have any speed issues in Max or Max design I would appreciate it. I can’t reproduce the problems and I have some major clients that are telling me there are issues that are stopping them from using the system.

Much thanks to any one that can help out.

Hi Paul,

I have installed Walter and Oliver.  Strangely I can only instantiate Oliver.  Walter does not appear after the closing the nice little splash screen.

I was playing around with Oliver and did not see any significant slow down.  The rollouts in the modify panel did take a moment to update but still less than a second.  I have Max 2010, not the max design version.

Was there a specific set of actions that was causing performance issues?

Yep just trying to select, move or just about anything else with the character. We have found the problem thanks to help from Max developers. In Max design there are two INI settings that have been turned off by default, both of these settings affect speed in complex hierarchies.

In CurrentDefaults.ini change both these entries to a value of one if you are seeing slow downs in complex setups.

DontRepeatRefMsg=1
InvalidateTMOptimization=1

Thanks for testing.

I forgot to ask, what did happen when you tried to create Walter? How did you try and create Walter? Can you just open the file, it is located in your Max install in a PENProductions folder.

Glad you were able to resolve the issue.  I was not able to open Walter using the create panel.  When I clicked anywhere in the viewport, a dialog screen would appear with the picture of Walter, Licensing information, and quotes from Walt Disney, but Walter didn’t appear after closing the dialog.  When I tried to open the PEN_Walter.max file I get the following error message:

File Open Failed: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2010\PEN_Animation\PEN_Walter.max

Not a very descriptive message… Oliver opens without problems.

Hmm, corrupt file? Can you try down loading and installing again?

There are two INI settings that need to be changed that affects all complex hierarchies. These two settings are defaulted off in Design and are set when setting the UI design to anything that is based on Design.
