problems using gizmos on a imported skin modifier?

i imported the skindata from a skinned mesh. (essentially the same mesh) which however originally had a couple of morph angle deformers.

however when i am importing the skin data into the copy of the same mesh, i cant see that deformations, and i cant even apply a new gizmo. it distorts the mesh to a puffdle.

using gizmos in a skin modifier does not yield proper results which is based on an imported skin data, - is this s knows issue? or i am doing something wrong here?
