This functionality has existed in Max for as long as I can remember. It was a very efficient way to clone objects or elements to objects/elements. The alternative now requires many more mouse clicks, and is a departure from the shift + translate methodology.

The clone + translate still works, but the shift + click(no actual translation) no longer works.
