It’s great that you can save the final gather points to a file to reuse them...but only if you remembered to check the box BEFORE you rendered! Why not have mental ray ALWAYS cache the current render’s FG points to a temp file which can then be reused or copied to a permanent file after the fact?

My guess is that Disk I/O is slower than just accessing memory. So for renders where you will not need the FG cached you’ll be incurring the latency with writing to disk.
It’s just a guess :)
