Wish:

Ability to merge by layer, similar to ACAD import by layer.

Example:

1) open master scene
2) import > merge
3) choose “by layer”
4) merge everything in selected layer(s)

Currently the only solution is to “save selected” the items from a master file that you want to merge into a new file. Example:

master file contains 1) building, 2) lights, 3) trees, 4) furniture. I want to merge just the furniture into an existing scene file. Currently I have to manually go through the entire master file’s list of objects and hope to find the furniture objects, which are all on a “furniture” layer, but are not individually named properly (common when importing Sketchup files for example).

This feature would allow you to simply go to import > merge > by layer > furniture > all (or select some from the list).

I whole heartedly second that wish!  I have even investigated writing a Maxscript to do it but I think it’s impossible.
