I spoke to two Autodesk guys this year, who came to my workplace to give a feature update on the new 2011… Apparently the next release of MAX will be a re-write, were they pulling my leg???

Time will tell!

I guess autodesk will have the features at first the way ppl want it then they would go on that route ;)…

n nah max not finished yet you can see guys how many complains about the features n the UI

* UI still have a ton of problems especially those (Ribbons n Caddies) - i personally suggested to merge the tools of ribbons inside edit poly n the way caddies work…
n having that ame-light skin as default with nice buttons rather than that ugly dark gray misleading UI with those old bricks style

* Viewport Enhancement is great but Navigation still the way it is… meaning still sometimes buggy -that’s something need to be addressed somehow i guess kinda radical changes-

* Rendering issues -many features has been implemented they are all great but not finished yet.. you can see new material browser n new slate material good but not finished i guess you can’t even control the values of shaders without seeing the old one rather than expanding it inside of it n collapse it-

* modifiers n the way it works… many many suggested some improvements

* gamma issues still there.... doing some buggy stuffs for the view-ports

so so .... it’s still in the midway guys not finished to go for it

As quite a young max user (4 years) and starting with version 8 I personally found caddies quite good. Start getting used to them slowly and even horizontal drag is ok - it feels natural especially when you have polys extrusion exactly on horizontal level, from sides.

But I am also of those who welcomes idea of ribbon being integrated into command panel/editable poly.

Other than that I may only wish max devs success on route they choose - CAT is interesting and quicksilver looks promising besides all other stuff.

me too found caddies could be OK… if you’ve seen my suggestion ...
*adding the tab n enter keyboard shortcuts n the right click to zero things out…
*giving some simple options for customization: opacity, size, enable/disable selection tracking, vertical/horizontal drag
now it would be like BANG!

but ribbons not welcomed for me at all… that’s why my suggestions was all about how to merge it with edit poly n the space issues:
* for those tools that you’re using it less (like free form tools n painting UV’s) i suggest press a command inside of edit-poly bringing a floating dialog box has the tools (just like uvw modifier ;) )
* n autodesk can use icons there for the most obvious command (like grow, shrink, loop n rings...) instead of having a big text on that command
* they can get rid of that ugly UI n its old bricks n having more space (not just for edit poly)
* there’s a ton of space wasted by the original edit-poly like the smoothing group instead of making buttons for 1 2 3 .... make a lil box with a fly menu

It also has to do with Max’s crap digits of accuracy.
Autocad from day one has been 16 digits.
Max is maybe three??

Did you sometimes try to calculate something using MaxScript. The result is often very rough, inaccurate for the last digits. It is perhaps because of this that there are so many bugs, the basis of Max was created a long time ago before 2000 and is not too good at calculating, but they still use the same system. Perhaps is it this that needs to be rewriten but how to rewrite it is another question.

Search Ken Pementals Blog for the stuff on Excaliber if it’s not mentioned already in this thread, I just glaced over basically. A re-write was attempted, Max Underground has articles on what happened.

does that mean XBR change its direction to leave the core as it is?

and isn’t what it started for… but in phases so that people can catch up with these changes? and they wouldn’t face the changes in one version?
