Hello,

I have a Problem with a client i am creating a detailed Architectural model for.
My native app is 3DS Max Design 2011 with fbx 2011 3.1 and i need to export my model via the fbx plugin, so the client can import it in Maya.

The Problem is, most of the Instances i created (some are mirrored instances too) remain their Pivot at the correct position, but the object ist somewhere in space (e.g. 20000 meters away).
I already tried converting every object into an editable mesh (or poly), reset xform and then instance this one. sometimes with success, sometimes without success.

i just can´t figure out what is going on there.
And the model itself will be high detailed with lots of instances (e.g. lamps, chairs, tables...)
that an obj-format would be way too big to deal with.

Has anyone an idea what i am doing wrong ?
When i import the fbx i created back into 3DS Max, everything is in place,
only in maya the objects are moved somewhere…

regards,
ingo

Which version of Maya?  Are you using the latest FBX plugin for Maya? 2011.3.1 is the latest.

It is Maya 2010 64bit with FBX plugin 2011.3.1

Perhaps the 2011 plugin in combination with maya 2010 has some issues ?

Has no one got an idea ?
Is it possible that maya 2010 in combination with the FBX plugin 2011 causes these problems?
My Exporter in 3DS Max says “Compatible with Autodesk 2011 applications and 2011 FBX plug-ins” when i export my model.

Does this mean it is not compatible with maya 2010 using the 2011 import plugin ?
anyone from the fbx team here perhaps ?

regards,
Ingo

Can you check to see if the FBX file is correct using other viewers? (quicktime/ViewerScene/TNG/fbxviewer)

Can you create a test FBX file that has this issue and post it?

Thank you Doug!

I didn´t even know there is a quicktime FBX viewer plugin…
But i tested it, and it looks as if everything is in place, just like after reimporting to Max.

So i think the problem is on the client side, in maya…

Thank you very much, Doug

Ingo

So, the client got the latest Maya 2011 and the latest FBX importer plugin, but the result is still the same.
Many instanced (not all) are scattered all over the Universe while their Pivots remain in the correct position.

When i watch the fbx in quicktime everything is fine.
What the hell is going on there? The Problem is, they say this is my fault and i have to export it as obj or collapse all the instances but then thefile is about 800 to 1200 mb big.

Please, has anyone suggestions ?

regards,
Ingo

Can you create a small test case the demonstrates the issue?

creating a test case is difficult for me as i don´t know exactly which objects are not in place.
i would send you the whole file, if it wasn´t strictly confidential.

but meanwhile i found out that it has to be an issue with maya and the maya fbx importer (or the client has some made some bad settings in the import dialogue).

My exported fbx is definitly ok, as it looks good in the quicktime fbx viewer AND imported in Cinema4D.

Perhaps you have an idea anyway…

Pehaps you can get permission to send the fbx file do Autodesk.  You can trust them :)

To create a test case:
Load the model into Maya, just select the an object that is out of place. Then open the attribute editor to see what the object is named.

Then in Design, delete all but that object and another one for reference.  Perhaps you can replace confidential objects with cubes so you can post the test case.
