Hi,

We do not support FBX2011 format in our program, so when doing export (using MEL scripts) I need to set export version to FBX2010 (or older). How can I know which versions are supported by FBXExportFileVersion?

The only idea I have at the moment is to get the FBX plugin version. How can I do that?

Thanks,
Paulius

Hi Paulius,

Good question.  First, I should clarify: FBX 2011 uses FBX file format 7.1 to read and write its files.  FBX 2011 is the first version to write to that file format (Revit 2009/2010 writes to FBX file version 7.0, but that was the only product before 2011 releases that wrote to 7.anything) and so the only products/plug-ins compatible with that version are ones that released in the same time frame: All Autodesk 2011 products that released in March/April 2010.

FBX 2010, FBX 2009 and FBX 2006 plug-ins all write to the FBX 6.1 file format.  Therefore, with regards to FBX compatibility, those versions should work fine with each other, but it’s always good to match one version with the other (i.e. 3ds Max 2010 using FBX 2010.2 export to Maya 2010 import using FBX plug-in 2010.2).

To clear things up, with our FBX 2011 plug-ins, we added descriptions to the FBX file version options in the FBX exporter and importer UI and Converter UI:

FBX 2011 is compatible with Autodesk 2011 applications and 2011 plug-ins (i.e. Revit 2011, 3ds Max 2011 using FBX plug-in version 2011.1 or 2011.2, 3ds Max Design 2011 using FBX plug-in version 2011.1 or 2011.2, Maya 2011 using FBX plug-in version 2011.1 or 2011.2, MotionBuilder 2011, Mudbox 2011).

FBX 2010 is compatible with Autodesk 2010 applications, 2010 FBX plug-ins and MotionBuilder 2009 (i.e. Revit 2010, 3ds Max 2010 and 3ds Max Design 2010 using FBX plug-ins 2010.0/2010.1/2010.2, Maya 2010 using FBX plug-in version 2010.0/2010.1/2010.2, MotionBuilder 2010, MotionBuilder 2009, and Mudbox 2010).

FBX 2009 is compatible with Autodesk 2009 applications and 2009 plug-ins (i.e. Revit 2009, 3ds Max 2009 and 3ds Max Design 2009 using FBX plug-in version 2009.0/2009.1/2009.3, Maya 2009 using FBX plug-in version 2009.1/2009.2/2009.3, Mudbox 2009, and MotionBuilder 2009).

FBX 2006 is compatible with Autodesk 2006 FBX plug-ins and MotionBuilder 7.5, 7.0, 6.0.

I hope this information helps and sorry for the delay.  Let me know what else you’ll need to know; I’ll be happy to help of course.

Thanks.
