What’s new in FBX 2010.2?

* ADDED SUPPORT: Display Layers

Feature Description:
The goal of this feature is to allow FBX interOp workflows for Display layers between M&E applications.

Usage
Display layers will import and export to and from Maya and 3ds Max automatically.

* ADDED SUPPORT: Selection Sets

Feature Description:
The goal is to create FBX InterOp workflows for Selection Sets between M&E applications. Selection Sets are non-exclusive (objects can have multiple memberships) grouping methods for objects and sub object components.

Usage
In the Maya and 3ds Max FBX Exporter UIs, activate:
INCLUDE > GEOMETRY > SELECTION SETS (default=Off)

Selection sets will automatically import into either Maya or 3ds Max without user intervention.

* ADDED SUPPORT: Smooth Mesh / Turbosmooth

Feature Description:
The goal of this feature is to support Smooth Mesh representations from Maya & 3ds Max to third party DCCs or game engines. Improvements include support for Maya’s Smooth Mesh Preview and 3ds Max’s TurboSmooth Modifier as well as edge/vertex crease data.

Usage
In Maya’s FBX Exporter UI, activate:
INCLUDE > GEOMETRY > SMOOTH MESH

In 3ds Max’ FBX Exporter, activate:
INCLUDE > GEOMETRY > Turbosmooth

* ADDED SUPPORT: Stereo Cameras

Feature Description:
The goal of this feature is to enable/enhance camera workflows from Maya to Toxik and Vxf. This feature is for FBX to support an extended Camera Model, based on Maya’s current camera model. This includes supporting a full Stereo Camera rig from Maya. The approach will be to match the Maya camera model, as close as possible, in order to be as close as we can get to a 1:1 representation between Maya and FBX.

Usage
Stereo cameras export and import from and to Maya automatically.  The data is lost when importing FBX files with stereo cameras into 3ds Max, as 3ds Max does not currently have native stereo camera support.

* ADDED SUPPORT: Mudbox FBX Interoperability

3ds Max and Maya now interoperate with Mudbox 2010 with FBX technology (version 2010.2 required).  Mudbox will support the data exchange of the following:
- Meshes
- UV Coordinates
- Reference Textures
- Sculpt Layers (on same sculpt level; supported as Morph Targets (3ds Max) / Blendshapes (Maya))
- Materials
- Paint Layers

For more detailed interopability information regarding Autodesk M&E products, please click the Support / Documentation link on autodesk.com/fbx; there are now 4 Interoperability Charts detailing what is supported between M&E applications (3ds Max, Maya, MotionBuilder and Mudbox), using FBX technology.  These charts have been carefully updated for this 2010.2 release.

Please consult the readme.txt files that install with the plug-ins for information on specific bug fixes, as there have been a number of them in this version.  If you run into any issues at all or have any questions about the direction we’re headed in with our plug-ins, please contact us at fbxplugins@autodesk.com.  We’re of course very interested in what you have to say.

We hope you enjoy the release!
