I am exporting a scene from mobu to maya.

I am trying to retain my groups and sets created in motionbuilder.

The maya FBX import has not a trace of Groups or Sets that are in the FBX file.  Are these not supported in maya’s fbx import?

Thanks!

Hello bentnormal,

Groups and sets from MotionBuilder are not supported in Maya. While both MotionBuilder and Maya share the same names for Sets and Groups, they are very different. For example, a group in Maya is a transform node which can become the parent of a hierarchy you wish to group. Adding an object to a group in MotionBuilder will not give you a null or parent object. A set in MotionBuilder is very much like a group however it has additional functionality and supports animation. In Maya, its more of a method of quickly selection a group of objects.

Please let me know if this something you would like to see in a future version of FBX and I will be happy to log a suggestion on your behalf.

Thanks,

Hello David,

I have a similar issue and hope you can help me. I’m using FBX SDK to convert FBX files to our own internal format. The FBX file is generated in MotionBuilder and it displays Groups in there. However I cannot find those nodes programmatically iwth SDK. Is there any way around that or they are supposed to remain hidden outside MotionBuilder?

Cheers
