Hi,

I’ve seen reference to this being on Autodesk’s radar for more than a year now, yet it still doesn’t appear to be supported in 2010.2. Is there an ETA on how soon we might expect multiple named takes in an FBX file from the Maya Exporter? (rather than just Take 001).

Thanks,

Adam Miles

Hi Adam,

When exporting from Maya, in the exporter interface, check Animation - Extra Options - Use scene name. The take name will have the scene name instead of “Take 001”.

That didn’t quite answer my question I don’t think. Maya has support for “clips”, which specify various portions of the animation timeline as being for certain animations. ie, frames 0 to 30 could be “Walk”, 40 to 60 “Run” and 70 to 90 “Fall Over”. This appears to be supported in the FBX file format in the concept of “takes”, since a single FBX file can have many takes. But the Maya FBX Exporter will ignore the Maya ‘clips’ information and simply export the entire animation timeline in a single take, throwing away all information about what portions of the timeline correspond to a given animation.

Whether that single take is called Take001 or the name of the scene isn’t particularly of interest, more the fact that the Maya clip information is not present in the FBX file.

Ok, I see your point.

Maya’s clips and FBX takes are not exactly the same concept. Clips would be sections of an unique take.

Plans are to support clips in some way (probably not as takes) in the 2011 release.

Thanks for the reply Viviane. Do you have an ETA on when we might be seeing the 2011 release? Is it likely we’ll see a beta on beta.autodesk with clip support prior to the final release?

Thanks,

Adam

I am sorry, I meant 2012! (Which is due in 2011). We won’t have time to add clip support in the FBX SDK 2011 release.

Is there any command support to declare multiple tracks for an exported FBX coming out of Maya currently?
