Hello

I am brand new to Maya and I need to animate removing material from the outside of a wooden bowl.

Here is a video of what I’m trying to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn0SRFk-tOs

I’ve been using a Boolean difference, but I keep getting weird errors, such as random polygons being deleted and the entire bowl disappearing.

The original bowl was modeled in SolidWorks and I’ve tried importing it directly into Maya using a plug-in and also saving it as an .fbx in modo then importing that.  Neither way of getting the file into Maya has worked.

Thanks!

Nikki

If I was animating this (as in the video) I would create a profile curve.  Revolve the curve leave the history on and animate the shape of the curve.  I wold model some wood shavings to be used for particle instancing.  Place an nparticle emitter at the base of the blade, set the revolved object as a collision object and make some tweaks to the emitter and that should do the trick.  I would also animate my texture to add detail to the cut section.  Good luck

have you had a look at blendshapes and animating the blendshape weights?

I have not.  I’m not familiar with blendshapes, but I will look into it now.  Thanks for the tip!
