So… I’m animating camera moves where the camera zooms in and rotates. and normally the gimbal gets messed up so that it doesnt have an axis about which to properly rotate the way i want it. I can counter this by parenting it to a locator and the locator is in a group which is aligned properly. BUT that only works per shot. I have to align the group per angle that I need it at. but I can’t just move the camera to another area in the scene and have it work fine.

does anyone have any ideas/tips for camera setup?

work out what moves your doing first then alter the rotation order to suit, gimbal can be minimised with some forward planning.

tip: gimbal will occur on middle axis. ie default is xyz, and rotating object 90 degrees in Y will now have gimbal. so if your camera is going to rotate alot in Y, alter the rotation order so Y is in the middle, i suggest trying to use xzy and testing working from there.

so it IS a per: situation basis then right? I can’t just have a setup that works for everything…
ok.

yeah pretty much, but tbh this one setup should cover you for most situations.
you could create a simple rig to cover most basics, have a look at camera rigs, there are a few good examples.
