I am able to create beveled, extruded text with any of the installed Windows truetype such as Ariel and Times New Roman without issues. However, a client project requires the Avenir typeface, so I installed Avenir and it’s entire family on my Maya 2008 workstation and Maya can see the type family and all seems fine until I create the type. Then Maya produces this error and no object appears:

// Error: bevelPlus4 (Bevel Plus Node): Group 2 curve 2 is not inside the previous curve. Group these curves appropriately in Adobe (R) Illustrator (R)

I have tried all the variations of Avenir typeface, but they all produce the same error.
I found that if I use characters that do not contain a hole in them, such as ‘m’, ‘l’, etc., the character/object will be created. However, in the case of ‘m’ the geometry is distorted when the bevel is turned on, even if bevel amount is set to zero.

Is there a known issue and workaround or fix for this? I am going to be creating a lot of flown 3D text and will need to use the client’s typeface frequently.

Take care,

I’m having this problem with Bank Gothic Light and Medium fonts, too. I’ve tried a bunch of sources for this typeface, and every single font file produces this error in Maya 2008. Can’t produce work for the client if I’m spending all my time trying to figure out how to fix this. :(

Do you happen to have access to Adobe Illustrator?
You could create your text there - and then import into Maya.

Maya seems to not handle all font types… though I can’t find any documentation on the matter.

Yes. After much trial and error, I managed to get one string of text into Maya from Illustrator. Oddly, Maya cannot read the last 5 versions of Illustrator. I had to incrementally save older versions until I got all the way back to 3.0, which Maya happily loaded.
As I am going to have to do this with a large number of text elements, I was hoping to avoid this extra step, but it looks like it’s the only way to go.

When saving from Illustrator - be sure to uncheck the ‘Create PDF Compatible File’, that should allow you to use your current version of Illustrator.

Will check again, but I seem to recall doing that and it not loading into Maya. It wasn’t until I save Illustrator 3 format that Maya took it happily.

It should do the trick, I frequently create curves in CS3 and bring over into Maya with no problem…
