Hi there,

So, after several tests, I’ve concluded that the mental ray Fast_SSS shaders in Maya 2008 don’t appear to work correctly under HDRI lighting.  Specifically the Back SSS on the Fast_Skin shader doesn’t show, although oddly enough adjusting it’s Scatter Radius effects the appearance of the Subdermal Scatter.  Also, the Spec values tend to clunk out.

So, I’m wondering if anybody has encountered this and figured out a fix.  Yeah, I realize that I can simply add in some lights to get the effect, but seriously this is annoying, you expect things to work you know.  My desire to keep the lighting strictly realistic has kept me away from lights lest I get the desired “look” via unintended cheats, only to find that it’s screwing me up. Needless to say I’ve lost tons of time because of this so some help would be great.

Thanks in advance.
