Im running Maya 2009 Unlimited on a Windows Vista 64 bit machine. In Maya if I switch from a 4-view to just perspective and switch back to the 4-view, I get an error message telling me that it cannot locate one of the cameras and has used a default. This ends up making 2 or 3 of the viewports show the exact same thing, even if I try to change them to a different view. I tried closing the software and reopening, but now the that cube thing in the viewports to change the view is gone, and all the viewports still display the same thing.

Does anyone know a way to fix this, as it makes the software nearly impossible to use.

Is this the error that you’re getting?

// Warning: Could not find an appropriate startup camera: top.  A substitute will be used.

If so, that means that top is not an ortho camera. Change the topShape’s Orthographic attribute (under Orthographic Views) back to ON.

The 3 cameras, top, left, and front all have orthographic ON under their properties. Problem is still there.

I’ve seen this problem too in Maya2008 ext2 on XP.

Never really solved it, as I find the camera set-up in Maya (Panels) quite confusing compared to the camera set-up in 3D Studio Max (Viewports).

Next time I see this problem occur I’ll try to add some more useful info to this post.

Hello, i’ve seen this problem in the past with almost each version of Maya and personally, i’ve just recreated those problematics cameras. This is a simple workaround but at least you can continue your work. You can also export your objects, create a new file and import your work in this new file.

How do you go recreate the cameras that the software can’t locate?

Just create a new Orthographic camera in replacement of your missing one. But its just a workaround, you may consider exporting your scene on a new one if you want everything back normal.

Are you able to post your reply in English for us non-Spanish speakers?
Would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry, I do not know English.

using the program I realized that in my case, what happens is that Maya fails to recognize the orthographic camera when you do a rotation of it.

For my case the solution is achieved in this way.

So the first thing you should do is go to the “Four View” and in the camera that occurs error, go to “Panels / Orthographic” and put the camera they want have.
after, open “Attribute Editor"with it open, go back to the camera and select “View / Select Camera” continue “View / Default view” ... and make the rotation of the camera they want, in “Rotate Axis” and NOT in “Rotate” found in “Attribute Editor”
Save scena.

Ready, should not have more problems with the camera.
