Is is possible to get a floating window of the layer manager?
I noticed this is possible in Render Layer mode, but not in Display mode, at least not through the local menus. Just wondering if someone knows a way to do this.
I’m still learning maya, so that’s why i ask the obvious questions.
thanks
thomas

Turn off Show Layer Editor within the Channel Box in the Preferences under UI Elements. Now you’ll get a separate layer editor that you can tear off.

very cool that this is possible. only problem is i can’t get it to work. urg.
ok just gonna walk through this very slowly maybe you can point out what I’m doing wrong
1) Window > Settings/Prefs > Preferences
UI elements > Editor in Main Window
change the radio button from Channel Box/ layer editor to Attributes editor
uncheck Show
Save

this removes the channel box from the main UI, but does not create a new floating layer editor.

if I click the click the Channel Box/Layer button in upper right of screen, the Layer manager appears docked to the right. I don’t see how to get this to float.

hmmm… too bad this isn’t easy and intuitive. sorry to be a pain in the arse. I am used to intuitive software, not thinking software. can you please tell me a bit more in detail how to make this work :) pretty please?

"Show” should be on, and Layer Editor should be on as well. You need to turn off “Show Layer Editor within Channel Box”.  If the Layer editor does not appear in a floating window, you need to undock the Layer Editor.

To undock the Layer Editor, drag the double-dotted edge of the control away from its current place and into the middle of the scene.
