I am a true newbie and haven’t been able to figure out how, or even IF, you can open a scene created in Maya 2010 with Maya 2009. Is there anyway to do this, or to export it so that Maya 2009 can use it? I’m creating scenes within 2010 for my boss who’s still on 2009 version of Maya. Is there a work-around or a plug in? Anything??

Hi, Well this post seems quite old.. but if you still haven’t get any solution for this then I got one here.
Go to File menu and open option box of “open scene”, check “ignore version” and save and close dialog box.

Now go click “open scene” option and simply browse your file. It should open your older files just like any latest files.

Try saving the 2010 file in .ma format.  Then open the .ma file with Wordpad and modify the first several lines of the file to say “2009” wherever you see “2010”.

This has always worked for me with previous releases of Maya.  But if you are using a feature in 2010 that is not available in the version of 2009, like Fur or Fluids or something, then you may have a problem.  But its worth a try.

Thank you very much for responding!
I found GuySmiley question was for the same issue (but he’s on a mac, and I’m on windows) The response to his question was actually good too, with an added tidbit.... it’s when you are in Maya 2009, if you click the open option, that’s where the ‘ignore version’ allows you to open the 2010 scene into Maya 2009. VERY good to know!!

(A) the ez way; u can go to “open scene” option box (that little box on right of the “open scene” item) and then chose ignore version.. that’s !t
*you don’t have to save the file as ma, so u can use the mb files

(B) the long way is to open that file as .ma file(save the original as “.ma” file ext.), then at the start of “requires maya “2010” line;” write “//” i.e(//requires maya “2010") that’s !t
this will ignore reading that “requirement-condition” wile open the file.
*you have to save the file as ma to read it and modify it in any text editor.

you can open an older maya file version using both (A and B)
but keep in mind:
there are some features will be ignored (i.e if you’re using “nDynamics” in your maya2010 scene and you want to be open with maya 2008; the “nDynamic” features will be ignored! Why? cz there are no translator for these new features, in other words “no common features” )

Hey i just wanna drop in and thanks for the suggestions… but there’s another quick and easy way, Export your file as Maya ASCII.  I was using 2012 and had to go back to 2010. So this method worked. Hope this will help anyone who comes to see this topic.

I just want to confirm here that the process of exchange the year inside the .ma file works with Maya 2011 OSX to Maya 2010 Windows perfectly !

Thank you ! It makes my day !
