You have “Reflection” turned on for the select tool. The easiest way I know to manage that setting is to double-click on the first icon in a column on the left edge of your Maya Screen, the one that looks like a mouse cursor. That will open the settings panel for Select.

Below the Soft Select settings section is one for Reflection Settings, and there is a checkbox in there to turn reflection off.

Maya 2011 in general is nice! Especially nice is the hammering and vertex weight copy tools. Overall, the skinning workflow is extremely well done!

However; Whoever over at Autodesk that decided that a special interface for handling files that overrides the system default should perhaps be demoted.

You’ve spent time developing a feature that constantly hampers my effectiveness. Just now I accidentally destroyed some data due to saving to the wrong file. This particular error was that I copy-pasted a folder path from explorer, and then it saved to the folder as a file, which happened to be another file.

Now this particular error is to be honest quite un-instersting, the problem is that the whole paradigm of attempting to solve a problem that the operating system already have solved is suboptimal. In the best-case-scenario you will still not have solved any problem. In reality, you’re just duplicating the amount of bugs. (OS + Program).

You’re talking about the File Save Dialog I assume.. You can switch back to the OS Default…
Windows > Settings/Preferences > Perferences > Files/Projects > Fille Dialog (All the way on the bottom.. )

Just started teaching Maya 2011 on OS X at local college.
Maya 2011 is very buggy in that class-room.
I even tried the latest Hot Fix (v3?) and still no go :P
Anyone have tips on this?
I can get the specs next time but honestly dont know why its so buggy.
I have no control over the Mac Pro specs but can make recommendations.
I dont have the same probs at work running Maya 2012 Demo on 12core Mac Pro.

Has nothing to do with the machine. Maya 2011 has hundreds of known bugs. A couple of those were addressed in the 2012 edition, so that’s probably the way to go.

Running Maya 2011 on my iMac at home. Sure there’s the occasional annoyance, but I don’t find it “very buggy” at all. Then again, I’m still pretty new to it and haven’t dived deep into many features beyond animation.

Also, try applying the Maya 2011 Service Pack 1, that’s the lastest and came after (and includes) Hotfix 3.

I must also mention I’m still in OS X 10.5. I’ve heard Maya 2011 had (more?) problems in OS X 10.6, but I don’t know specifics and how widespread that issue is.

There’s a downloadable list of the many bugs that Service Pack 1 fixed on the download page. One that was really bugging me at the time was scripts that expand the height of the shelf (aka double-height shelf) now work again!

Maya 2012 is not a good version until we put into consideration some the other packages such as Hotfix 4. With hotfix 4 being installed upon, I say Maya 2012 is a good jump by Autodesk, adding procedual textures, as well some bug recovery which ease out the process of working, but the Texture and Shaded-Mode display still are tangled up in a long strain of problems. The hardware connection seems to be too fragile to rely on, and one has to make sure to support himself with a workstation-quality VGA.

Hey Guy

I hoping someone could help me out.  I work professionally in Maya. Im about to get a new computer. If you had 5k to spend what kind of system would you get?

I like the idea of having a Mac and running window, so I can have the best of both world. (also i can get a nice discount through a friend), but i cant for the life of me find anyone who has tried running maya on a new Imac on the windows side of course.

I have used 8 and 12 cores running windows at work (works fine), but im told by my friend that he wouldn’t advise getting in the 8 or 12 core because he said they arent getting any update soon. (Guessing the next big thing is coming).

I’m not sure if it’s a bug issue that has been updated with the service pack which i am now downloading because i am just getting so frustrated when working on a project, which by no means in a data heavy complex scene. It’s just really two 2 story buildings with office furniture. I have textures for the buildings and am mostly using mia x materials for mental ray for when i start rending a walk through of the interiors. Anyway i very often deal with the program just locking up on me when i want to change to vertex mode, toggle back n forth between wireframe/shaded modes, sometimes when i apply a color to a certain face. i had thought it was the build up of history that would cause it but ive been keeping that clear as possible and yet i still periodically get that major lag. At time ill will just terminate maya via the task manager. Any ideas of why this occurs ? Has anyone else had this issue of unusual lag/unresponsive wait times ?
