I am just learning Maya, on the 2013 student version for Mac.  I am trying to use mental ray, but I can’t find it. It doesn’t show up in the tab on the render settings window, and I have looked in the plug-in manager for mayatomr, but it doesn’t show up at all. As I understand it, the plug-in should be standard in 2013. Any idea why it isn’t appearing, or where I can get it?

Thanks for any help.

scroll all the way to the bottom of the plug-in manager - mental ray now has its own section.

Just to be sure I wasn’t missing it because it was called something else, I clicked the load button on every plugin in the /Applications/Maya.app/contents/MacOS/plugins section of the plugin manager, but no luck.  The other sections of the plugin manager are empty.

I can find the mentalray folder in the Maya2013 application folder, but when I try to connect to it using the browse button of the plugin manager, I get the following error message:

// Error: file: /Applications/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/pluginWin.mel line 665: initializePlugin function failed (Mayatomr)

I have uninstalled Maya, and reinstalled it to make sure it wasn’t corrupted, no good.

// Error: (Mayatomr) : setup command execution failed //
// Error: file: /Applications/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/pluginWin.mel line 665: initializePlugin function failed (Mayatomr) //

i am just wondering if maya will ever get a native renderer , rather than rely on plug-ins etc..?

Maya Software Renderer has been a part of Maya since version 1.
MR is much more robust though…

Maya Software Renderer can still do a few things unsupported by other rendering engines…
What functionality are you looking for exactly?

i just thought that autodesk/maya would have developed their own renderer beyond the “software” one.. i dont know , after working with mental ray for so many years you just want something different..!! and with artwork rendered with MR LOOKS similiar to other MR rendered artwork..

The ‘software’ one is their own…
I’m still not understanding what your looking for…

If you want to use MR - it ships with Maya. If your wanting to purchase Vray, you can visit the Chaos Group website at:
http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/index.html

There are several Renderman compliant renderers on the market… again - all comes down to what functionality your needing…

Browse for the Mayatomr plugin in the following location:

/Applications/Autodesk/maya2013/mentalray/plug-ins

If you don’t see it in there, you might want to uninstall your current version and install Maya 2013 Service Pack 2 which can be found at the following link:

It is in the application folder, I just can’t get it to appear in the render manager.  I’m starting to suspect that Mental Ray isn’t licensed in the educational version but I can’t find anything anywhere that would confirm this suspicion, and I haven’t encountered anyone else with this problem.
