Can’t render due to: Error: Could not create command port : Workstation:7835

What does this mean?  I am running an unlimited 8.5 educational license.  Does that not allow
rendering?  Trying to render files for reel and am at a loss.  Tried simple ball animation test
and the above was the message I get.  Otherwise it just sits there not processing anything.  Tried
Software, Hardware and mental ray to no avail.

Running on Dell 690, 4 GB RAM, 2.83 Proc, Nvidia 3450 card.

Please help.

Thx

Mmm, this problem it is when you are going to do the bash render or all the time?

Yes this is happening at the batch render level.  I can render indivdual stills.  Some of my colleagues
suggested command line rendering.  But that is treating the symptom not the sickness.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Try to create a new proyect, set it up. and save the scene there, and next do the render, if that doesn work let me know.

My batch render functionality (the one from the render menu) is also broken. It stalls with both Maya Software and MR. When I launch Maya, I also get the error “could not open command port"… What is the connection with batch rendering, if any?

The command port is a port set in your userprefs on which maya listens for remote Mel commands. This is used to talk to plugins, for instance. I turned off external communications in my preferences (under the Applications tab), and I stopped getting the error. But batch render from render menu still fails… It starts off ok, writes a couple good frames, but then seems to hang and hang, and hang. I cannot cancel the batch render, because maya tells me the batch render hasn’t started yet…

My workaround has been to command line render.

Strangely enough, I work on a machine identical to that of the OP… A Dell Precision 690, 8gb RAM, running RedHat Enterprise and Maya 64bit 8.5.
However, I don’t think the hardware has anything to do with it. We are researching this issue and will post here if we resolve it.

This actually sounds like something got deleted out of maya...i would save the project your working on and do a new install....

I would rule out this possibility, according to our troubleshooting.

I had this on a PLE version running on XP ... mine was related to my firewall (McAfee) permissions ... once I allowed connections for Maya.exe, then the error message went away.

Just reboot your system, worked for me.

Sounds like a firewall or antivirus software is blocking Port 7835.

Windows Ports are TCP or UDP.  Pretty sure this is TCP.
