Hello all,
I have had the PLE of Maya 8.5 on my computer for the past year, but have only recently begun to really make use of it. I have just started my Animation classes, and our first assignment was a simple model. Cool, I thought, I’ll model it at home and open it at school so I can get credit.
Well, I spent 11 hours of frustration last night with a buggy PLE making my model, and brought it to school. I tried to open it to show my professor- nothing. The PLE only saves in .mp format, which is not supported by the full version of Maya apparently.
I plan to do my models at the school computers from now on until I can afford the full version myself, however I don’t want this model to become moot… since it’s due (half done) today and (completed) tomorrow.
Is there anything I can do with this? I manually changed the file extension to .ma and tried to Import it into Maya but it didn’t recognize the file type.
Please help!
Would it be possible to export the file from the PLE 8.5 into 3DS Max as a .obj, and then re-convert it to Maya 2009?

No, it is not possible to convert .mp into something the commercial version can read. Think about it; if that would have been possible, everybody would have been able to use PLE to create content for the commercial version. Alias did everything to make sure that would not happen.
