Hello!

When I use Maya help, it defines things, but doesn’t tell me how to access the feature it is defining. Either that, or I don’t know how to use Maya help properly. Either way, I have a couple of questions

I have Maya 7, which I believe was the last version made by Alias.

I have the student version, if that makes any difference.

QUESTION 1) Are there upgrades or plug-ins that will help me to open files from school (Maya 2008)? Everyone is telling me to check the box marked “ignore version,” but my version of Maya doesn’t have that option in the Import File Options Window, nor in the Open File Options Window.

QUESTION 2) Someone else suggested that I export the files from school as .obj files. Will Maya 7 be able to open these, or is there another way to export them as earlier versions of Maya?

Any help you can offer me so I don’t have to drive to school to do my homework would be appreciated.

Maya 7 can open .obj files - but won’t retain a lot of the scene information outside of the geometry info itself.

My suggestion would be to save your school files as Maya Ascii (.ma) files, and then at home - open the files with a text editor and change the 2 or 3 references of Maya 2008 or whatever to instead ‘7’ or ‘7.0’ (can’t quite remember).

Thanks, but I have tried to open Ascii (.ma) files at home, and still get an error message--

I will try the text suggestion. I know my mentor/friend does something like that on his computer, but I couldn’t remember what he changed in the code. I am especially green at coding!!!!

I appreciate your help. and will print this out and give it a try!!! ^_^

Merry

Hello again! I tried your suggestion, but am not sure I executed it correctly.

I opened the file in WordPad, and changed Maya 2010 to Maya 7.0 in about 4-5 places, then pasted it into the lower window of the Script Editor. Then I tried using the number pad enter, but when that didn’t work I used the Execute command from the menu. The code went into the upper window in the Script Editor, but nothing appeared on the Maya “stage”

Any suggestions would be welcome!

ALSO:
Here is the error message I get, when I simply open Maya on my home computer:

// Warning: Your system does not have hardware accelerated OpenGL, or your driver is not configured properly. Maya will continue to run, but you will get significantly better performance with accelerated hardware. //
file -f -new;
// Result: ./untitled //
docServer -start;

I have found I get this message immediately upon startup, though I am able to create objects, and have even made a skeletal rig of joints (without controls) without a problem, and my computer will open that without a problem.

Should I buy more RAM for my little old machine? I can’t afford to replace it at the moment, otherwise it would be employed as a doorstop this very moment!!!

Not sure what your pasting into the script editor, just ‘open’ the .ma file in Maya after saving the version changes from WordPad.

As far as your OpenGL error - sounds like you are running an unsupported video card, and this can cause many problems during your interaction with Maya…

Do you know what your machine has in it for 3d acceleration? Most likely, you’ll need to upgrade this to get a decent experience with Maya.

Thanks! I also need a new sound card!

I was hoping to have that done soon, but have been between jobs, and need to pinch pennies for now. The computer was not designed for 3D acceleration, so I don’t know what is in there. I had a “guru” put it together about 6 years ago, and had another one work on it, so it is kinda cobbled together.

My next machine will be store bought!!!-- someday…

I will try to open the file in Maya. When I save the changes in Word Pad, it wants to save as a text file. Can I save it as an .ma file or an .mb file?

You can save it out of Word as a .txt file I believe - then just rename the file extension to .ma

Well, I finally had success. I found that I could use Edit > Replace, and replace all instances of 2010 with 7.0.

Now this is what I was missing for a long time: when I go to open the file, I scan down to the bottom of the list and find “Best Guess.” When I select that, all of the WordPad files appear, available to be opened in Maya 7.0.

If this was Adobe or Microsoft, I would have been able to save to an earlier version of the program, and I wouldn’t have to go through all these gymnastics. Perhaps this is because Maya is so complicated?

Interesting. If it was originally saved in a MAC, do I need to make any changes regarding that? (I have Window XP)
